With a population of around 13,000 people, the city of Truro is situated in central Nova Scotia at the east end of Cobequid Bay.
Originally, Truro began as a fishing town and then transitioned into a farming community. When the railroad was put in during the late 1800s and transporting goods became easier, other businesses popped up, including mills. While the economy has experienced some leaner years than the past, many see a resurgence on the horizon. The city has put a lot of effort into improving and developing the downtown core, and there has been a lot of growth in the private sector.
What You Can See and Do in Truro
Despite being smaller in size, Truro still has a lot of interesting things for visitors and residents to enjoy. Victoria Park is a popular place to visit. This 3,000-acre park is situated right in the centre of town. It has some amazing walking trails, biking trails, beautiful waterfalls, and a heated outdoor pool. Being one of the hidden gems of Nova Scotia, you will likely want to spend a lot of time here.
Another place to spend some time is on the Cobequid Trail, which has 18 km of walking and cycling paths. You can visit year-round, so consider snowshoeing or cross-country skiing during the winter. On Saturdays, you can head to the Truro Farmers’ Market to pick up some produce and other goods including cheese, wine, mead, baked bread, and other treats.
If you enjoy beer, you will be happy to know that there are a couple of fantastic breweries in Truro—Salty Dog Brewing and Truro Brewing Company. Check out the craft beer and maybe bring a few growlers home.
Since Truro is just south of the Salmon River and is on Cobequid Bay, you will find plenty of great water-based activities! Doesn’t matter if you’re heading to the beach for a nice swim, going out on the boat for some fun and fishing, there is plenty to do on the water.
Truro Neighbourhoods
One of the things to note about Truro is that it doesn’t have separate communities or neighbourhoods within the city limits. Most of the homes for sale in the city are located relatively close to the centre which is around 37 square kilometres.
Most of the homes available in the city were built before 1960. Large portions of the city are considered heritage districts and have homes that are more than 100 years old. About half of the properties in Truro are rental units, meaning there are some select homes available for purchase.
One of the reasons many folks consider moving to the city is the affordable Truro real estate. In addition to homes already built, those who are looking for a newer property may want to consider buying a vacant lot of land and then building on it.
Most of the units available are single-detached houses, although there are also semi-detached homes, duplexes and row houses available. Truro apartments are available, as well, and most of the properties will have fewer than five floors. The city is also expanding housing options and plans to add more multi-family dwellings.
