Selkirk is a small city with a population of 10,000 residents located in Manitoba along the Red River. It is only about 22 km from Winnipeg, the capital of the province. Tourism, the Selkirk Mental Health Centre, and a steel mill are the main elements of the local economy. A vertical lift bridge across the Red River connects the town to East Selkirk.

Just because Selkirk is a small city doesn’t mean there aren't all sorts of activities for residents to enjoy throughout the year. One of the most popular places to visit is the Maritime Museum of Manitoba. You can learn about the various watercraft that were used in the area long ago, and even see some of these vessels.

Another place to learn about the region’s history is the Lower Fort Garry, a national historic site and museum just a short drive from the town. The Selkirk Waterfront along the Red River is a beautiful spot that holds events during the summer. Those looking for a brisk hike or swim can check out Birds Hill Park.

Fun fact - Selkirk is known as the “Catfish Capital of the World” thanks to Chuck the Channel Cat, an 11 metre catfish located right on the main street.

Getting Around in Selkirk

Selkirk has a fixed-route public transit system operated by Selkirk Transit Authority. It runs from 6 am to 6 pm Mondays to Fridays, and 8 am to 6 pm on Saturdays. It does not operate on Sundays.

Selkirk Mobility provides door-to-door assisted transportation services to those in need in the city. It runs from 7 am to 5 pm Mondays through Fridays and from 8 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Ridesharing options are available through Go Manitoba.

Those who live within the town will find that some places are within easy walking distance. However, most of the residents will have vehicles so they can travel around town, to Winnipeg, and other locations.
