Kensington is a small town found on Prince Edward Island. As of 2021, the population of the community was just 1,800 people.
It was founded in 1824, and it was first known as Five Lanes End. This is because there are roads from five different nearby communities that meet in Kensington. In 1824, when it was founded, it was called Barrett’s Cross due to one of the early settlers who built an inn there. The name changed again in 1862 to Kensington, and it became a town shortly thereafter.
What You Can See and Do in Kensington
Kensington might have a tiny population, but that certainly doesn’t mean you won’t find a lot of things to enjoy as a resident.
For starters, you could head to the Kensington Veterans Memorial Military Museum. It includes a range of exhibits including historic firearms and uniforms. The museum began in 1985 and is meant to memorialize the bravery of those who have served and died for their nation.
Without a doubt, one of the most interesting attractions and buildings in the town—and possibly Prince Edward Island—is the Haunted Mansion. While a lot of haunted houses only operate during the Halloween season, this one is open year-round. You can tour the haunted mansion, check out the rides, and have a nice spooky time.
A lot of the land around Kensington is dedicated to agriculture. With a short drive, you can reach places like Thunder Cove Beach, Kite Point, and Cabot Beach Provincial Park to enjoy the great outdoors.
Kensington also has some nice little shops including How Bazaar, a clothing shop that has a range of other little knickknacks. In addition to a Tim Horton’s, you can find quite a few other places to enjoy a bite to eat, as well, such as Greco Pizza, Family and Friends, C&B Corner Café, Mary’s Bake Shoppe, and Bakin’ Donuts.
Kensington Neighbourhoods
Kensington provides a quaint atmosphere because of the low population. However, this could be an ideal option for those who are seeking to raise a family in a quiet, family-friendly place to live. It could also be a nice choice for retirees who want to get away from life in larger cities. Consider some of the Kensington real estate options and the best reasons to move there.
Despite being small, Kensington still offers some nice amenities that make it a good place to call home. The location makes it easy to head to many of the other towns in the vicinity to find anything that you might need that Kensington doesn’t offer.

It is home to Kensington Intermediate Senior High School and Queen Elizabeth Elementary School. Kensington also has several preschools, making it a perfect place to live for young families.
While there is a lot of greenery, there aren’t many designated parks. However, Alysha Toombs Memorial Park and Kensington Cenotaph are both popular spots.

For this reason, most of the residents will have vehicles to help them get to where they need to go, including commutes for work.
One of the benefits of the town is the confluence of the main roads at the centre of the city. This includes Veteran’s Memorial Highway, Victoria St. E., All Weather Highway, and Broadway St. N. These roads connect to the other communities in the region, making for easy travel.
