Edmonton is the capital of Alberta and is located along the North Saskatchewan River. The population of the city is just over a million people as of 2021, but that population swells to 1.4 million when including the entire metropolitan population. This makes Edmonton the fifth-largest city (and sixth-largest metro area) in the nation.

The location of Edmonton has a long history. Fort Edmonton was established in 1795, and it was incorporated as a town in 1892. It is now a major economic centre with a host of large businesses making their home there.

What You Can See and Do in Edmonton

The city of Edmonton has a substantial amount to offer residents. If you are in the mood to go shopping, head to the West Edmonton mall. Here you will find more than 800 stores and services as it's the largest mall in North America. It even features a water park, miniature golf, and theme parks.

Edmonton also has a large Ukrainian population. You can visit the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village that’s just outside of the city to learn more about this interesting part of the city’s history. The museum has dozens of historic buildings that will give you a glimpse of what it would have been like to have lived in the area in the early 20th century.

Getting Around in Edmonton

The Edmonton Transit Service operates the Edmonton Light Rail Transit, as well as a large fleet of buses to help residents navigate the city. Edmonton is also home to the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway, as well as the Edmonton International Airport.
