Oshawa is a city in southern Ontario found along the shores of Lake Ontario. It is just 60km from downtown Toronto, and it has a population of a little over 175,000. The city’s name is derived from Ojibwa and means the crossing place. Oshawa was incorporated in 1850 and was once a major part of the automotive industry in Canada. A General Motors car assembly plant reopened in 2021 and is the headquarters of General Motors Canada.
The city is also home to Durham College, Ontario Tech University, and Trent University Durham. It is considered to be one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. It has a good economy with plenty of jobs in a range of industries including energy, IT, advanced manufacturing, and health technology logistics.
Sports play a fairly important role in the community. The Oshawa Generals are part of the Ontario Hockey League, and some of the past athletes who have played on the team include Hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Orr and NHL pro Tony Tanti.

Getting Around in Oshawa
GO Transit offers intercity trains that connect to Toronto and Hamilton, as well as buses that take passengers to locations outside of the city including Toronto. Private intercity buses are available as well. Durham Region Transit provides the local bus service. The closest international airport is Toronto Pearson International Airport.
The city has many bike trails and bike lanes on the streets for those who like to ride or who wish to commute via bike when the weather permits. Many of the residents in and around Oshawa have their own vehicles to help them get around the city.
